Thanks to Lyric1 for finding me the reference photos for this skin, an update of Jocko's similar 111 Squadron all-black Spitfire skin.
111 Squadron was the first RAF unit to receive the Hawker Hurricane and during the Battle of Britain employed these in head-on attacks on German bombers. In April 1941 the squadron was re-equipped with the Spitfire Mk V and in December of that year ordered to change from day to night operations. So to reduce visibility at night each of their aircraft was painted black, with wing roundels obscured. The idea was that their Spitfires would home in on a bomber caught by searchlights and shoot it down. However the Spitfire's poor forward visibility and narrow track gear made it dangerous as a night aircraft and the squadron reverted to daytime operations a few months later. This particular aircraft was flown by Sergeant Peter Durnford.
