Anyone using Reshade?
« on: February 08, 2020, 11:21:50 AM »
I used to use SweetFX in AH2 but haven't in a long time, probably since AH3. Nicely tweaks the visuals. Saw something about Reshade, the newer version of SweetFX, in another forum and thought I'd give it a shot.

Installed it with only a few filters and didn't really go nuts with them. Small adjustments tend to go a long way where big adjustments just start looking silly beyond a certain point.

Last night in FSO was the first time I was running AH for any time and my PC crashed several times. Not just the game crashing, a full on PC crashed off and restart. Not normal. I hadn't changed anything but updated video drivers and had an oculus update. Got the idea it was Reshade so I unchecked all filters. Crashing stopped. Flew last hour in FSO and MA afterwards without issue. Coincidence?

So it's anyone using it with any success? Or is it just not compatible with AH?

FWIW I noticed some time ago that AH can look very different depending on the monitor. On some it looked dull and flat, on others it looked vivid and interesting. Further investigation revealed that the monitor presets can do a lot! Instead of using the neutral setting which looks nice and calm when reading the forums and performing home office tasks, try something like "game", "movie", "photo" etc. They may make the forum look glaring or even blatant, but one of those can make the game look supernaturally vibrant. As it's only beyond a few pushes on the buttons of your monitor it's worth trying!

I've got an older system by today's standards that still runs the game well by my standards.

Yeah my monitor has presets. Strangely, I've found the preset for gaming looks way worse for any application! All the colors are washed out and the contrast sucks. I'll generally use a setting think it's called cinema or movies that provides a sharper image with better color and contrast depth. It's just that I'm a tweaker and like messing around with stuff. The Reshade filters I was using last night looked great but can't have the PC going kerplunk over it! Nothing elaborate. Off the top of my head I think I had fake HDR, levels, vibrance and adaptive sharpen enabled and only a tick or two of them at that. Something clearly didn't mesh.

But when you're using that you need extra depth. Me? I'm a little depth guy!

Not really... I use the 38DD setting. It enhances the flying capabilities of the P38J.
