Terrain Editor / Mapmaker problem
« on: August 20, 2000, 12:07:00 AM »
Ogre:
I have run into a problem and am wondering if the following is the correct process to use "Mapmaker" and import them into "AH Editor".

I used mapmaker with the settings or
Lat    24.49
Long -161.22
Width    7.2

This is the Hawaiian Islands

created folder in Ah Editor directory as
/terrains/hawaii

put the exported and renamed hawaii.elv hawaii.typ  files in mentioned folder

started  AH editor

I selected  "edit terrain","set terrain"

entered "hawaii" (same as folder)

exited without saving

...
Now when I launch AH editor into "offline" it dumps to the desktop.

If I delete the /settings/curterr.cfg file
everything works ok again.

seems to not like loading the terrain
as created.

You need to copy into your Hawaii folder a file with the extention *.oba (object file).  You can get an empty one in the "blank" terrain folder of the AH Editor.  The empty oba file contains the tower object, which the Editor needs to start you off.

What I like to recommend is that when you are starting a new terrain that you copy the terrain folder called "blank" then rename it and overwrite the typ and elv.  This give you all the base files.

P.S.  One thing you are going to notice with the Hawaii terrain is that all textures will be "rock".  For some reason the USGS land cover data doesn't include Hawaii, so you will have to texture it yourself the old fashioned way    I'll be looking into this to see if I can find a better cover data set.

Thanks Ogre !

I thought it might be caused by something like that.

I was just using Hawaii as a test.
I'm thinking of doing something for late war pacific that would lend itself to H2H
4 vs 4 type fights.

Hey everyone... and Ideas ?

Hey Snoopi: How about Marshall or Solomon Islands.  Not necessarily the whole things but like maybe as small as the Russell Island group northwest of Guadalcanal.  If I read my map index correctly the Russell's are about 20 miles long.  The is also the Nggela group with Florida Island and Tulagi which is a little larger but about right for a H2H thing.

BBGunn:

I'm thinking the same thing

Gonna work on a small group near there, but I haven't decided which.

I was thinking of virtually moving around in the larger area and "real estate" shopping.

Ogre:  HELP !!!

Ok this is what I have done now...

copied "blank" folder & renamed "testpac"

exported the terrain and copied/renamed them into the new "testpac" folder.

launch editor
"set terrain"...  testpac

exit editor WITHOUT saving..

relaunch editor

NOW.....
The terrain is the BLANK terrain
(even though it is using the correct folder, correct name, etc..)

What the heck is with that ?

Thanks in advance !

Snoopi

hmmmm.....

Ok, here's a question then a coupla suggestions based on guessed assumptions

Probably a dumb Question (on my part), but how do you know its the blank terrain?  I think the blank terrain should be all water, right?  If so, and you are using your Hawaii terrain, could it be you just haven't found the islands yet?  I've found that with island terrains, I really have to hunt around to find them.  If you haven't gone through the process of creating a map, the map will most likely be all water even though the terrain isn't.  Also, if you haven't done so already set your terrain size in the AH editor to 512x512 so you can see just how big the area is (rescales the map so you don't have to fly off the edges to reach the boundary of the terrain).

Edit:  Suggestion 0.5.  The editor produces a .bmp when you enter/exit the editor.  Find that bmp (should have the date and time you entered/exited).  Is that bmp all blank?

Suggestion 1.  Try  deleting all files in your testpac folder *except* the typ, elv, and oba, and then try again.

Suggestion 2.  Try making a terrain that is all land and see if that works.

I'm sure you've tried some of these already, but with the inherent turn-around time using the Internet I figured I'd better just dump as much info and questions as possible

Raxx has a terrain that he has been working on since the start of the closed beta, Papua/New Guinea & the Solomons , that is very good and should be out shortly.

I saw a prototype of it, and its beautiful.

Just a minor tip that may help someone.

Once you have your .elv & .typ files in their new dir go to the settings folder in the TE.

Find a file called "curterr.cfg" and open it.
(notepad works)
Whatever it says is what you'll see when the TE starts.

Ogre:When talking 512x512 miles is that nautical miles ?

Vermillion:
I'll keep an eye out for it.

Sounds like RAXX's terrain will be bigger than I'm looking at.
I wanna build something small for
field vs field, H2H,  4 vs 4  fights.
Maybe 20-30 miles.
I know I can change the scale but I'd rather make it 1:1 and just be in a small area.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I'll let you know how things go.

Snoopi

P.S.  just noticed the post that water shows up black for some people. Hmmmmm....I'll have to check this out.

Ogre:
OK...I owe ya a Drink !

I'M A ^%#$ MORON !  :0

Yeah yeah all you goofs SHADDAP !

The terrain was there the whole time.
What the deal was:

-The water shows up as black.
-The center of the terrain(where the default  tower is) was a water area.
-I didn't realize the editor only shows a    small area of the whole terrain, even when   zoomed out ALL the way
-I couldn't read the help docs with Wordpad
 (see BBGunn's thread)

After realizing that the black could be water, I moved around the terrain and by accident zoomed way outside the visible square area. Surprise ! Islands were zooming by.

Now I just have to pick an island for Ronni, Yankee and I, to settle down on.
Unh?  Hey...Whataya what from a dog !
