Stray missile fired by Su-25 on flightline
« on: April 20, 2020, 08:04:48 AM »
YIKES!

In a bizarre and tragic accident, a Chadian Air Force Su-25 parked at the Adji Kossei airbase fired a missile that struck an empty fuel truck, zoomed by a French C-130 Hercules transport plane and hit a house, killing 5 civilians.

A surveillance camera video of the incident has leaked online, showing the exact moment the missile was fired, apparently accidentally, as the fighter jet was being prepared for takeoff, according to local media.

The missile burst through an empty fuel tanker truck and flew within meters of a wingtip of a C-130 Hercules transport aircraft, both allegedly belonging to the French armed forces deployed in Chad as part of the counter-terrorism Operation Barkhane.

I wondered the same thing.

Stray voltage on the rail?

Most aircraft have a weight on wheels (WOW) switch that disables the weapons circuitry (among other functions) while the jet is on ground. Although the SU-25 is way out of my experience, one would presume that similar fail-safes would be universal in all fighters worldwide.

On F4s (at least) a stray voltage check with a multi-meter was required to be accomplished on any station to be loaded with armament prior to loading and signed off in the forms.

Hard to say at this early stage.

Wow!  That video is both fascinating and scary.  Can’t even imagine loafing around on the flight line and seeing that coming across the ramp.  Thanks for sharing Sundowner.  :salute

Ditto here.

The flight line is a dangerous environment. But the carrier deck during launch and recovery ops is crazy dangerous.

Head on a swivel.

"Dad, will the Maverick fire if we're still on the ground?"

"I don't know, I never tried it.  Why?"
