News from Oculus
« on: August 18, 2020, 10:32:03 PM »
"Today, we’re announcing some important updates to how people log into Oculus devices, while still keeping their VR profile. Starting in October 2020, everyone using an Oculus device for the first time will need to log in with a Facebook account"
"If you’re an existing user and already have an Oculus account, you’ll have the option to log in with Facebook and merge your Oculus and Facebook accounts.
If you’re an existing user and choose not to merge your accounts, you can continue using your Oculus account for two years."

If I would ever go VR, I now know it's not going to be Oculus  ;)

But, what’s to keep other VR manufacturers from doing the same thing?

Facebook owns Oculus.

Yes, but do they own twitter? I don't understand, why an announcement on twitter?

Understand, I'm no fan of Facebook, but it seems this might be a troll.
I'm not looking to replace my Oculus with another Oculus, more likely the new HP if it lives up to the hype, but still, something sounds off here.

Because many people are on twitter. HTC as a twitter account, too.

What do you mean by 'troll'? What seems to be off?

Facebook acquired Oculus six years ago, and now they plan to make a Facebook account mandatory for every oculus user.

I don't have a Facebook account and haven't used my Rift in months, so I need to ask, was the announcement also made on Facebook and/or in the Oculus home UI somewhere? That's the first place I'd expect an official announcement.

I followed your link and read more.

"After January 1, 2023, we will end support for Oculus accounts. If you choose not to merge your accounts at that time, you can continue using your device, but full functionality will require a Facebook account."

I wonder what that means exactly.
The only thing I've used my Rift for is Aces High and a couple of free single player games offered in the Oculus store.
