Seeing Double Gun Sights w/ Rift S in VR
« on: December 07, 2020, 12:38:21 PM »
Hi,

Im using the Oculus Rift S, just got it yesterday.  When playing in VR, I am having this issue:  When I focus on the gun sight, i see two "HUD Projection Screens" (the glass the gun sight is projected onto).  When i focus on the HUD Projection Screen, i see two gun sights.

I've toggled with every setting I can find.  I am curious if anyone is having this same issue or if anyone knows of a solution?

Thanks,
Matt

That's the diff between 2D and VR. In VR you can look at a thing and focus on that but other things will tend to separate depending on the "distance" as you now have a perception of depth due to the stereoscopic effect of VR. This isn't a problem in 2D on a flat screen as everything is at the same distance.

Have you set your IPD? Do you know what it is? It's an important setting and will tend to fix that issue... maybe. The RiftS doesn't have a mechanical means of adjusting that like other headsets do, it's in the oculus software. It displays on a single screen and splits it unlike some other headsets that have two displays that physically move together or apart as needed. It has a fairly narrow range of IPD that you can set too, which was a gripe amongst potential users. If you're wider or narrower than that range things might look screwy like that maybe to the point of making you sick! If you don't know your IPD, get to an optometrist or vision center and get them to measure that for you. Just takes a sec. Might do it for free. Mine did. They put a gizmo on the bridge of your nose and dial in where you're pupils are that'll tell you the number.

What I've done is bump my forward view so that my right eye is centered on the gunsight even tho I'm within the range. I do it so if I'm recording or streaming I only do that using the right eye. That way it doesn't look all skewed. I never used the HUD.

The two reticle gunsight issue is a normal condition in VR since it has to be drawn for each eye in the same focal plane as the target. When you focus on the gunsight you see two reticles because the gunsight is a closer focal plane, when you look through the sight and focus on the target you should only see one reticle.

You can get a similar effect by holding up a finger in front of your monitor and changing your focus from the monitor to your finger and back.

Hey Drano,

I appreciate the response. So are you saying other headsets might rectify the issue, but Oculus isnt capable given is software/design?  If so, what headset would you recommend?

Thanks,
Matt

That would only be if your IPD is so far outside the recommended range it's buggin you no matter where you set it. It's fine otherwise. I'm getting lost replying to two threads. At any rate here's the official word on the IPD and RiftS:

Rift S IPD Range

Facebook confirmed to us the range of lens separation adjustment for Quest is 58–72mm.

For Rift S and Go, the lenses are fixed at 63.5mm. This means Quest is “Best for users between 56mm and 74mm” and Rift S and Go are “Best for users between 61.5 and 65.5mm,” according to Facebook.

---------
It's physically fixed on the headset but somewhat adjustable in the software. But only within the range. My IPD is 63.5 so I'm good. You say you've tried every setting. Don't do that. Find out what your IPD actually is and set it to that. Now go play and see if you don't get used to it in a day or two. Don't panic!

It will get to where you dont even use sights. For me its like SKEET/TRAP any more. It will take a bit for your brain to adjust to what your eyes are telling you. Also, you will not be as "GOOD" right of the bat, with VR. It is TOTALLY DIFFERENT. RELAX, BREATH....you have done nothing wrong...PLAY
