New Hobby - Bee Keeping
« on: January 18, 2021, 08:13:40 PM »

Back in the fall of 2018 I went to my local county fair to advertise our family timber management/real estate business. Across from my booth I noticed the South Central Arkansas Beekeepers Association had some pamphlets about all the benefits bees provide and interesting facts. I was immediately hooked in, so about a month later I attended a three-night course on getting into beekeeping (I was blown away at the number of people - I had expected only a handful but in actuality there were close to 70 in attendance).

During the spring of 2019 I purchased two hives from another beekeeper looking to downsize and placed them on my family property near some fields and tupelo/hardwood bottomland. It has been quite the learning experience (not the least to minimize all the stings I endured at first!) My first year I made about 9 gallons of honey and just this past year of 2020 I made 11 gallons. My beautiful new wife as of October 2020 had the above logo made for me when I first got going, got to say it was well beyond what I could have hoped to do on my own and just what I wanted. While my main product has simply been bottled honey (which comes in two main harvests, one during the spring and one during the fall), I did try to make one rather disastrous batch of honey mead and my wife tried her hand at making candles from the wax. I've been fortunate to not to run into any major pest/disease problem - I hope to branch into a third hive this spring. The bees are really fascinating creatures as so much depends on them both directly and indirectly.

I've simply picked up bee keeping as a hobby to give out as gifts or sell direct to people who ask about it, I have no desire to make it a major business. My dad and grandpa really enjoy gardening for which I never had much interest in, but I hit on bee keeping as both unique and highly desirable for my family to enjoy the results. I'm afraid on the other hand these new pursuits have taken over my AH time for the last few years now as I'm basically retired from the game - but my passion for military aviation history remains unwavering. Are there any other fellow apiarists on the boards here ready to call in a swarm of little fighters to take on any base hoard?

Edit: I had uploaded my logo via DropBox, but apparently other browsers like Microsoft Edge and my iPhone did not like that. I now have it pulling from my FB page.

Like my bees, I am content in my work and am devoted to serving my Queen for what perfect WWII combat aviation sim could not possibly substitute <blinks twice>

Oh all the prop blades are intact, I think that upper left one seems a bit dim due to the motion of the propellers. The logo was based on the Sally B / Memphis Belle ship, hence for the odd checkered pattern also on engine 3.

Bees are important and thanks for helping them out -{S}- We'd be up the creek without them.
Sell or ship any of that wonderful stuff?   Takes pancakes/waffles to another dimension.
Far too many, if not most, people on this Board post just to say something opposed to posting when they have something to say.

Honey Solutions (we still call it Hoyt's Honey Farm) is one of, if not the largest domestic honey supplier in the United States. It is just down the road from my home. They ship around 30,000,000 pounds of honey all over the country each year.
