352nd FG Blue Paint Help
« on: January 17, 2021, 02:21:53 PM »
I can't find the photo of the UV-protected and preserved metal squadron Mustang model from the war that is out there (with the blue used by the 352nd for a period) but I found the following:

"Sam Sox, a former 352nd crewman, recounted how the latrines at Bodney were painted with the same blue paint as the noses. Someone checked and sure enough, the latrine was still standing. They peeled off layers of paint to find the original blue. They used this color to repaint "Miss Helen" P-51D 44-72216 a restored warbird that was an original 352nd P-51D.

"The color is FS 35056. Tamiya X-4 is a good match."

I have three shades that I am working with.  The original I used when I adopted this skin is at top.   I tried desaturation at various levels but I don't know which to use.   MISS HELEN looks much darker but that may not matter as CRIPES could have faded a tad with time.    Also, was the exhaust shroud painted on CRIPES...3rd?   Any input is appreciated.

Keep the current shade of blue. It's correct for Cripes A'Mighty 3rd. Paint the shrouds also.

I tweaked it just a hair.  It's ever so slightly darker.  Desaturated it about two percent.  I'll see how it looks in the game and if it's okay I'll switch, otherwise I'll stick with the original color.  It seems like it's just off in some way but perhaps I'm overthinking it.

I'll get the exhaust shrouds next as I'm still working on cowl rivets...

Way too dark. I think it looked better with the lighter blue. You had it nailed, just paint the shroud and it's good.

You mentioned in your OP that the top screenie and the in-game one are the same one?  I'm just confirming, because from here I'm seeing two different blues.  The one in your OP looks good, but the in-game (quoted) shows too dark.  :headscratch:

That should be correct.   However, it is possible I goofed something up somewhere.

The screenshot from the game seems odd to me.

I’ll try to revisit this tomorrow.   Also, if you look in the game now that version should match the top screenshot and the in-game image.   If it doesn’t then I modified something and didn’t change the picture on the skins page.

I was going to do a quick update but I may have to just do a full redraw.   Still have to nail down this blue either way.
