Snakes on a plane
« on: February 27, 2021, 06:09:30 AM »
Thank you to Lyric1 for finding me the info for this skin. Kev367th originally skinned this aircraft on the old P-38J shape.

One of only two P-38 squadrons to serve in the CBI theatre, the 459th Fighter Squadron were based in Burma. The other was the 449th based in China. The 459th received some ex-African campaign P-38Hs in late 1943. Their enormous range meant not only could they escort bombers deep into enemy territory but allowed them to hit Japanese air bases as far as 700 miles away, something no other Allied fighter could do. They soon racked up a 12 to 1 kill ratio over the IJAAF, who were still mostly equipped with the obsolescent Ki-43. This suppression of the enemy's air force made the British Army's air-supplied behind the lines Chindit operations more viable.

In 1944 the 459th received P-38Js and these were soon decorated with the squadron's distinctive snake art down the booms. Aircraft number 12 was flown by Lt. Harry Haller Sealy who named it "Haleakala" after the Hawaiian fire god. Lt Sealy scored 4.5 aerial kills during his time with the squadron, the ten kill markings displayed on the nose was because it was squadron practice to include ground kills in the tally.

Incredible work! Every new P-38 you create is better than the last. Glad to have such incredible talent supporting this game.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

Beautiful job.

I'm curious, how did you determine the color green you used with the snakes? I usually see 459th planes with a much more vivid green.

Well that's pretty definitive.

:D Yeah not a lot of wiggle room on that one.

Yeah I like the darker color on the snakes. Other depictions using an almost neon color never looked right to me. I figured that version was used to sell plastic models.

Now bright green on the spinners and tails of a 38 (80th) is about as perfect as you could get. They're always the bestest ones! Sayin!

Regarding the green on the snakes Lyric1's colour photo was the main reference, although all the B&W photos from this squadron show a similar shade of grey to the OD as well. Since this squadron was based in India I went with RAF Dark Green for the colour, as that paint would likely have been more readily available locally than say USAAF Medium Green.

Lyric1 also found me colour photos of some of this squadron's later P-38Ls, one of which I previously skinned on the old shape. These did not have the snake art but their NMF was camouflaged using RAF Dark Green above and RAF Sky below. So this makes RAF dark green even more likely as the snake colour. I think it also explains the white dotted outlines to the snakes, if the green colour was more of a contrast to the OD these would not be needed.

BTW I never trust decal sheets, warbirds and profiles for this sort of thing as a lot of the people who make them tend to be lazy and just copy each other's work rather than checking original photos. So just because there are half a dozen secondary sources all saying the same thing, it does not mean it is correct. Interpreting the actual WW2 photos is the only way to go and is a lot more satisfying when you spot something no one else has. For example none of the profiles or models noticed the black and white squadron markings on the lower vertical tails. They are in shadow on the photos so you have to look really closely to see them, but they are much clearer in photos of other 459th P-38s.
