A 109F from a Libyan Boneyard
« on: May 03, 2021, 12:25:59 AM »
Bf 109F-4/trop of 5./Jg 27 at the Martuba, Libya airfield in early 1942. Pilot unknown. This aircraft's fuselage was photographed in a line of fuselages from derelict 109's at the airfield. The supply situation dictated that un-airworthy planes be scavenged for parts and "Black 4" was one of several in that condition by February 1942. Markings are typical of a II/Jg 27 aircraft in December '41 - January '42, when I figure this plane was on flight operations. Theater markings consist of a white spinner and tailband. The II Gruppe crest is painted on both sides of the nose. 5 Staffel painted their horizontal tactical bars in red with the aircraft numbers in black. The fuselage shows complete stenciling, so I elected to include the stencils on the wings as well.

There is something about these Desert 109s that just looks right.

Excellent contribution to the game! <S>
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!
