Well which do you believe? A redundancy or from “departure” to “decision” to “doomsday?”

None of the above really.  D definitely stood for "Day," just as "H" stood for Hour, so in that way it is redundant.  On the other hand, it was usually a relative measurement, so D-1 was the day before your reference, and D+1 was the day after.  D+0 or D-0 is longer and more awkward to say, so you just make it D Day.
