SAAF Spitfire Mk Vb
« on: January 03, 2022, 05:20:54 AM »
Thanks to Lyric1 for finding me the info for this skin, which is an adoption of a Kev367th skin that he did in 2006. This is suitable for the January Tunisia 1943 FSO.

This Spitfire Mk Vb ER622 was flown by 40 Squadron of the South African Air Force in Tunisia during April 1943. This squadron flew armed low altitude recon missions with cameras fitted inside the rear fuselage. Like all SAAF aircraft, the RAF red in the roundels and fin flash was replaced with South African orange. Unusually for a desert scheme the yellow leading edge ID markings were also retained.

Just superb detailing.  I think you've really hit on the right combination of specular and power values for painted metal as well.  The 'hard' sheen looks just right.

Underside looks good.  When I compare it to your Hurri Potter, it doesn't look as "bold" and "rich" like your Hurri.

The upperside appears to have a very slight green-ish hue, though that could be due to the angle of the shots in the light. :headscratch:

I have desaturated my Azure Blue colour a fair bit since the Hurricane was posted. For the default RAF skins to be used in the January FSO terrain the Azure Blue was changed to this new shade before they were uploaded.

On my recent skins I have been brightening my specular file by about 50% for the painted surfaces while keeping the power very dark and the environment file black. This seems gives a more realistic metal shine without it looking too glossy. I've also got a patchy dirt layer in all three files that breaks up the reflections to prevent the surface looking too smooth and perfect.

Not sure about the green tint though as I am not seeing it myself.
