P-38G Rivet pattern diagrams?
« on: January 10, 2022, 03:29:18 PM »
Anybody have one of these to share?   All I have is a diagram for the P-38J/L:

I'm especially interested in the leading portion of the wings, especially outboard of the engines.  In the P-38J/L, these are additional fuel tanks.  In the earlier models of the P-38, I want to say there were oil coolers or intercoolers or something like that, built into the leading edge.  Just wondering how that would affect the rivet pattern.   Greebo's excellent default skin has the leading edge rivets running lengthwise, parallel to the edge of the wing.  Just thought I'd double check before I lay them down...

I also wasn't able to find a good panel line/rivet diagram for the P-38G or H when I was researching the default P-38G. So I used these P-38E diagrams instead. As I recall the main external difference between the E and G was the addition of a second hinged landing light below the RH wing.

The outer leading edges were indeed used as air to air intercoolers. External air entered the wing through a leading edge hole just outboard of the engine then passed outboard through the wing cooling the charge air as it went and exited through a small outlet above the wing tip. This arrangement was not very satisfactory and was revised for the J and L variants. For these the intercooler was moved under the engine alongside the oil coolers.

Thank you Greebo - looks like its from the same source as my P-38L rivet diagram.

Thats interesting about the intercooler openings on the top of wing, near the wingtips.
