Fw 190D-9's from II/Jg 301 (There's two!)
« on: March 01, 2022, 07:02:25 PM »
For the upcoming scenario I elected to skin two Doras from II/Jg 301. I wanted to illustrate the wide variety of cammo patterns that could be seen late in the war within a unit.

"Yellow 8" of 7./Jg 301 flown by Fähnrich Hagen Förster in March 1945. This Dora features camouflage typical of the Mimetall - Erfurt plant. The fuselage is painted overall with the green/brown tinted RLM 76 with red/violet tinted RLM 81 on the upper surfaces. The nose section was painted with RLM 82 green over the 81, leaving a band of the 81 at the lower edge. The wings were probably provided by an subcontractor and painted overall with green tinted RLM 81, even on the underside as far back as the wing spar. The center section was probably bare metal, but to save time I left it painted. I'll update it with bare metal when I'm satisfied with it's look. The wing upper surfaces were given a patterns in a light gray primer or RLM 77. All control surfaces were also provided by work shops and sent to the main plant for final assembly. These were painted with light blue RLM 76. (Note: This aircraft is sometimes depicted with a red cat emblem on the left engine cowling, given that a photo of the cowling is often paired with a photo of "yellow 8's" right side. It is only speculation that they are the same aircraft. Also, I drew this artwork and because of excessive pixelation and stretching, I elected to omit the red cat.)

"Blue 10" of 8./Jg 301 either captured at Leck or found abandoned at Neustadt-Glewe in May 1945. Pilot unknown.

"Blue 10" was finished with low contrast top colors which I elected to depict as being RLM 81 and 82, both in green tints. The light fuselage color and cammo pattern seem to indicate a fairly early build date for a Dora so I elected to use RLM 76 light blue on the fuselage and lower surfaces with complete coverage. The red/yellow tail band features the late version of the II Gruppe horizontal bar, being a red center with a yellow outline only over the red section of the tail band for contrast.
