Shortly after Operation Barbarossa, the Peace of Moscow between Finland and the USSR was nullified. Part of that treaty included some small islands in the Gulf of Finland that were occupied by the Soviets. The islands switched hands in 1942 a few times until finally, they were fought over. In 1942, the Continuation War from the Winter War was just beginning. The main fronts were Karelia, the Arctic, and the Baltic Sea. The islands of Gogland, Surrsaari, and Sommeri were up for grabs during the summer months of 1942 in the Gulf of Finland. Both sides attacked and invaded these islands.
