This Spitfire Mk IX was flown by the Canadian ace Irving Farmer Kennedy while serving with 249 Squadron RAF at Malta. Its factory disruptive grey/green scheme was overpainted in Dark Med Blue to better camouflage it against the sea. Kennedy joined the RCAF in 1941, flew Whirlwind fighters with 263 Squadron and then joined 249 Squadron on Malta in December 1942. He shot down his first enemy aircraft in February and scored seven more in the Med before his tour ended in January 1944. His second tour beginning in June saw him commanding 401 Sqn RCAF over France. Here he scored two more kills before being shot down by flak. He evaded capture after bailing out but was then sent home to Canada and in 1945 discharged from the RCAF to train as a doctor.
