This is the Spitfire Mk I of Squadron Leader Hilary "Robin" Hood, CO of 41 Squadron RAF during the Battle of Britain in which he claimed kills on a Bf109E and a Ju 87 on the 19th July. He was flying it when he lost his life on 5th September. While leading a head on attack on a formation of Do 17s his squadron was bounced by JG54 109Es and four of the Spitfires and their pilots were lost. Hood possibly collided with another Spitfire while taking evasive action. He is reported to have baled out but his chute tangled with the wreckage of his aircraft and he plummeted to his death.
The aircraft was painted in the early war scheme of dark earth, dark green above and aluminium undersides, with one black and one white lower wing as a ground recognition aid. A heraldic squirrel was painted on the fuselage, just ahead of the cockpit.
