A heads up for A to Z: How Writing Changed the World
« on: September 05, 2022, 07:56:47 PM »
AIRS SEPTEMBER 7, 2022 AT 9PM ON PBS

Just as writing changed the course of human history, the evolution of paper and printing revolutionized the spread of information. While the invention of paper boosted Chinese and Islamic societies, the simple fact that the Latin alphabet could be printed using a small number of discrete, repetitive symbols helped popularize moveable type, handing Europe a crucial advantage at the beginning of the Renaissance. The printing press itself kicked off the scientific revolution that fast-tracked us to the current digital age. (Premiered September 30, 2020)

Compared to the Chinese alphabet (and dialects) with approximately 40,000 characters - each one expressing a word in and of itself - the Greek alphabet was extremely useful to the general public. That and the printing press certainly pushed ahead mankind's ability to share ideas. Now we are in the digital age. But then misinformation travels at light speed, as well.

Ya .. really cool and the fact the words could be printed on paper meant ideas, thoughts and stories that didn't fit with the latest mainstream opinion, could be so easily burned.
Being male, an accident of birth. Being a man, a matter of age. Being a gentleman, a matter of choice.
