JG54 vs Soviets
« on: January 13, 2001, 10:27:00 PM »
Taken from www.blackcross-redstar.com

"On April 3,1942,JG54 lost two Austrian pilots from Group II,Lt.Arnold Kauer(37 victories)and his twin brother Lt.Eugen Kauer(6 victories). In the fight with Hurricanes from 485th IAP,both German pilots were shot down.Older brother Arnold had ejected and was captured by Soviet troops.Younger Eugen was killed.Victories were credited to Soviet Major Zimin and Captain Lazarev."

Anyone know of any other brothers who fought together on any side?Much less twins!

"On Nov.11,1942 Captain Sukov had been testing Yak-7b which had just been repaired. He took a risk and went to free hunt in the area of Bol'shoi Vishery. Not far away from the front line Sukov found a pair of German BF-109's which flew on the low altitude into Soviet rear.Sukov attack from behind at high speed and totally surprised Germans. One BF-109 was immediately shot down.Second BF-109 turn and run back to the front line.Third holder of the Knight Cross Lt. Hans-Iohim Heir(53 victories) from III,JG-54 became the victim of Captain Sukov, which had traditional "100 grams of vodka" after the fight.(It looks like Sukov became the JG-54 Nemesis,4 JG-54 aces were killed by him,3 of them were holders of the Knight Cross."

Anyone have any links on Sukov?

Twins Buck and Bill Patillo both flew for the 352nd FG.  Buck flew in the 486th FS and Bill the 487th.

Maj Gen Bill Pattillo was born on 3 June 1924 in Atlanta, Georgia and graduated from Atlanta Technical High School. He enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in November 1942, later completed the aviation cadet program, and received his pilot wings and commission as a second lieutenant in 1944.

During WWII, Pattillo served in the European Theater of Operations where he flew P-51 Mustang aircraft with the 352nd Fighter Group. Prior to being shot down while strafing a German air field and captured by Germans, he flew 135 combat missions, destroying a German me-262 jet fighter in a "dogfight" and six other Nazi aircraft on the ground. While with the 352nd, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters.

Lt Gen Charles "Buck" Patillo was born on June 3, 1924. He received a bachelor of science degree in mathematics from the University of Colorado in 1962, and a masters degree in International Affairs from George Washington University in 1965.

In November 1942, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet. Following intensive training at various bases, he received his pilot wings and a commission as a second lieutenant in March 1944. He next trained in P-40 aircraft, then went to the European Theater of Operations where he flew combat missions with the 352nd Fighter Group, Eighth Air Force. While with the 352nd Group he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters.

After the war they both rose to the rank of general.  They were founding members of the USAF's Thunderbird aerobatic team.

First Thunderbirds team selected

Brigadier General Charles F. Born, commander of Crew Training Air Force, appointed Colonel Levi Chase to find pilots to make the team......For wingmen, twins Buck and Bill Pattillo were selected. The Pattillos, both captains, had flown with the Skyblazers demonstration team in Europe and North Africa for three-and-a-half years, racking up many flying awards. Both Pattillos entered the Army as privates in World War II for flight training. Bill, however, was shot down over Germany and remained a prisoner of war until 1945. Buck served with 8th Air Force in England.

Nath you are so predictable.

How many of those victories were against vastly inferior aircraft in the early years?
How long did it take the Soviets to get better trained pilots to the front?

There is no dispute that JG-54 was one of the best LW squads of the war.Maybe the best, but that is another story.

Well, I beleive that the VVS started to get their toejam together by 1943 over Stalingrad and later over the Kuban River. So here...

19th of February 1943: Feldwebel Kittel scored the 4,000th victory of the Geschwader.

17 July 1943: Feldwebel Missner scored the 5,000th victory for the Geschwader.

9 October 1943: Hauptmann Nowotny made the 6,000th kill.

23 March 1944: Leutnant Wolf scored the 7,000th victory of the Geschwader.

15 October 1944: Oberleutnant Wettstein Kapitän scored the 9,000th victory.

The 400 more were mostly scored against the Soviets in an around the Baltic Sea, or the Courland Pocket in 1945.

So mostly 3/4 of JG 54s victories were scored against a non-obsolecent enemy.

Tony and Patrick Woods-Scraven.

Brothers, Royal Air Force

Both were killed within 1 day of each other in the Battle of Britain.  Believe Sept 1st and Sept 2nd, 1940.

If my memory serves me correct, one bailed out at low altitude but chute did not have time to open properly, the other bailed but his parachute failed to function properly.  Both were aces.

I believe Patrick was the oldest and had 11 victories and Tony had 7 victories.

Tony had terrible eyesight and passed the eye exam by memorizing the eye chart.  He was shot down or crashed landed many times (6, I believe) due to his poor eyesight. He had corrective lenses he wore while flying.

Kind of a sad story.  If anyone can add anything else on these two brothers, please do.  Also correct any data I have wrong here! Thanks!

I made some corrections!  1/18/01
