Book -- War of the Rats

This novel is based after the alleged sniper duel between Vasily Zaitsev and Heinz Thorvald, which took place during the Battle of Stalingrad (August 42-Feb 43). This book has been out for about a year now but I just finished reading it a few days ago, I would suggest it to anyone that's into WWII.
The attention to detail and writing is excellent.

Before reading this book I knew very little about ground warfare on the Eastern front, but now that I've read WotR, it's opened a whole new area of interest for me.

Another great book about the Eastern Front is The Forgotten Soldier bu Guy Sajer.  A first person perspective from a German (Alsatian {SP?}) soldier.  Check your local library.

I read that book too Nath.  I agree with your assessment, great book.

I also read "Stalingrad" by Antony Beevor which is a pretty cool history of the battle.

The war in the West was fierce, but the war in the East was something else entirely.

Beevor's "Stalingrad" is probably one of the best I've ever red, your right Funked.

And Derek Robinson's, is probably the best fiction series around about air-war in WWI and WWII. The last one, "Hornet's Sting", is very good. "Piece of Cake" is still the best.

Well if it's an Alsacien (not Alsatian  ) it's not a german but more a "Malgrès nous" (aproximative translation :"in spite of me") so a French in forced to fight for German army.

I might be mistaken, but I believe that this is being made into a movie.  I heard it mentioned, but I don't know any real details about it.

There's something about a sniper that just hits a note with me. Anyone read the Stephen Hunter series with sniper Bob Swagger? Think "Hot Springs" was the last one. How about the Half Life mod Counter Strike? There are several good sniper rifles in it. Too bad I don't live long enough to use them. Thanks for the book tip.

I read Point of Impact too, it's a great book, even if a bit far-fetched.

Sadly most of todays first-person shooters don't caiter to snipers, theres no real places for a sniper to set up or camoflage himself, and you can't realy take cover and move like you could in real life. Imo its about time someone made a dedicated sniper game.

Getting off topic, but what the hey.

Delta force was the best 1st person shooter I've seen for sniping. With voxel terrain, and actual grass you can hide in.

Playing with a buddy, 2 snipers hiding in the grass attacking an enemy base, thats fun.
