My First Long Range Kill !!!
« on: May 24, 2000, 07:42:00 AM »
Well, I had my first and only experience with the art of the long range kill last night in the MA.  By the way, went back in there for the first time in a while, as I didn't have anything else to do and really had a great time!  I guess many of you were right in your advice to weazel about simply take some time away from it to get refreshed and revitalized.  It worked for me, thanks.  I simply forgot about realism and bringing the equipment home nonsense and went "gang banging" with by small brotherhood of "Baby Seals".  All two of us!    hehe... 170- 200 mph tanks downhill to 27 sure aren't realistic, but what a riot as a game.  Thanks for the tips mighty1 on how to survive the Panzer IV 30 foot air leap maneuver, quite an ACM (GCM?) move.

Anyway, Apache (BTW, an awesome HOG driver), was on the six of my wingy and chewing his butt.  I came screaming in on Apache's six with a full load of ammo driving a Nikki (George), but was still too far out to get him off my bud mighty1.  So, I opened up with all 4 x 20mm's at a ridiculous 1.3k to 1.5k and just held the trigger down.  It probably would have melted the barrels off real guns as it sure wasn't the classic 3 second short burst the army taught me.  Anyway, Apache was doing a slow banking turn to the left tracking mighty1, with a sky full of my tracers and ball ammo scattering all around him.  I bet I had burned through 1/2 my ammo load at this point.

All of a sudden, I see a single flash at somewhere between 800-900 yards (think it was 854 or so) and Apache's wing falls off.  I was stunned, yet happy that I had managed to get there to help, unfortunately about 2 seconds too late as my seal wingy mighty1 became a fur jacket for some rich woman downtown.    My dual ammo counter was down to about 9 at the end of this short chase.

Duh!!...you think I had the film on...nope.  To bad, as it would have been nice to post here.  My point is that I've seen all the noise on here about long range kills and how unrealistic it is.  I'm not sure that's the case as considering the amount of lead I sprayed all over the sky in desperation during this engagement, I'm sure something would have hit someone.

Anyway, thought it might be of interest to a few of you as it seems to be a particularly sore point on here.  I have to say, even without icons I still would have been spraying all over Apache at huge distances just to try and get him off my wingy, so I don't think icons or no icons would have made any difference to me here.

Regards,
Badger

Just something (Not talking about this particular shot), I hear you mention of 3Seconds bursts... I usualy use short burst of 1 second max... Is that what I am doing wrong then ?

(Sorry, as I use to man HMG in the Army & also used to fire 1/2 seconds burst back then)

heh...my first kill on Aces High was from 1.1K away, back in the late beta days. With a Spitfire IX, go figure. I was the kinda guy that shooter anyone at lesser range than 2K, and that headoned all time. Hey and I even won some of them!

And I didnt ever know that there was a film feature...so no I havent it filmed.

And then I have to listen people that says that long range shooting isnt that easy LOL!

Sure the bud was straight and level...who wouldnt at 1.4K (his FE I guess) or so?

Hmmm.....you could be right SAW.  It has been a long time.  I seem to remember being told on the 30 Caliber Browning MMG and 50 Caliber Browning HMG, to say the phrase to yourself, "Son of a squeak" each time you pulled the trigger.  That would be approximately 1 second wouldn't it?  I think my 3 seconds might have been the maximum length of a burst to minimize jams, keep overheating down and maximize barrel life.

You know, I think it would be really nice if Hitech could simulate this in AH, perhaps as one of those toggled arena options.  I don't believe ANY on-line flight sim does this today and it would be yet another differentiation between AH and the competition.  It sure would change the way people used their weaponry today.

Regards,
Badger

Edit:  I meant simulate barrel overheating, gun jams etc.

You mean you want HT to simmulate the sound "Son of a B***!"  ?

Had fun last night till I got dumped.

Badger ..bud you see why I like going to 27?
It's not trying to take the base but if you want a tank battle it only takes a minute to get back to the fight.

Had fun at any rate and hope the "Seals" can do some clubbing again soon.

I sure support overheat THEN jam. Not so sure I'd like random jams. Maybe a hi G jam to prevent spray and pray in blackout.

just my .02

I use the .50's in short ranging bursts out to D1.1 all the time trying to make a fleeing con break. Once in a great while you get a golden BB.

That sure was fun going down the hill at 27, I passed an enemy tank going 100mph or so and he missed me by a long shot.  I then threw on the breaks and turned around and popped him in the bellybutton w/ one AE round at 300ft and ...poof!!!...he's dead....Sure wasn't realist, but was the most fun I have had in the tanks yet.  Too bad we didn't get the 47 in when we had 27 totally destroyed with nothing but tanks.   Why the bastards out of 27 closed 56 and ended the fun I don't know????  I could have gone all night w/ that ride down to 27, firing while going 150 mph.  I guess 10+ planes were afraid of what 5 tanks could do?????

I don't want any random failures, ever.  Discos simulate reliability problems quite sufficiently.
