Horst Hanning's Black Falcon
« on: March 31, 2023, 09:05:24 PM »
Fw 190A-4 flown by Horst Hanning (no relation to Norbert Hanning, author of "Luftwaffe Fighter Ace") in the spring of 1943. Hanning achieved 90 victories on the Eastern Front with Jg 54 when he was transferred to France in early 1943 to lead 2./Jg 2. He painted his Fw 190 with a black falcon design similar to those seen in Jg 2's III Gruppe. I believe this to be a personal marking for him since I've seen no other 2./Jg aircraft with this artwork. His first victory in Jg 2 was a B-17 brought down on Feb. 16. On May 15th, Hanning downed a Spitfire near Caen for his 98th victory but was himself hit in the battle. He bailed from his damaged fighter but his chute failed to open. Horst Hanning was only 22 years old.

Beautiful work; a real classic-looking 190.   :aok
