This Royal Hungarian Air Force Ca-1 (basically a license-built late variant Me 210 with better engines) was flown by the 1st "Eagle" Fast Dive Bomber Squadron of the 102nd Air Group. This squadron was formed with personnel drawn from the ad hoc factory and test pilot squadron that had tried unsuccessfully to use the Ca-1 to defend Budapest from USAAF bombers in April 1944. As a fast dive bomber the aircraft was more successful, fast enough to avoid interception and able to deliver very accurate attacks.
By late summer 1944 many Hungarian airfields were coming increasingly under attack from USAAF and Soviet aircraft. One particularly devastating attack was made by the 325th FG's Mustangs on 21st August, when they straffed the 102nd Group's airfield at Hadjuboszormeny and knocked out around half of the 100 or so aircraft parked there. In response to these attacks the RHAF began toning down their markings to make their aircraft less visible on the ground. This particular Ca-1 Z0+20 was also given an irregular scheme of green splotches on its upper surfaces.
