It's not a winter scheme! (Jg 52 Bf 109G-10)
« on: July 04, 2023, 12:57:13 AM »
This is an adoption of Mus51's Jg 53 Bf 109K-4 skin based on dubious profiles showing much lighter gray camouflage than it had in reality. It had certainly only one shade of gray at most, but it could have been paired with green or brown - or been green and brown. Regardless, players in this game often get it confused for a winter skin because of it's light gray coloration. I chose to replace it with an actual 109 with similar colors to the original skin, albeit not as light.

This Bf 109G-10 of Stab. II/Jg 52 was photographed in Neubiberg air base, Germany after Anton Kellmeier flew it there from Austria to surrender to American forces and not be captured by the Soviets. It seems that the entire unit did this using any operational 109's left at the end of the war. It was one of several surrendered at Neubiberg with a light gray paint, possibly RLM 77 light gray replacing the RLM 75 gray violet. The darker camouflage seems to be the standard RLM 74 gray green. II/Jg 52 was receiving it's 109 G-10's from Wiener Neustadt plant in Austria or its newly formed secondary branch in Czechoslovakia known as Diana. But Diana was not a single plant, but a loose network of smaller workshops in caves producing individual sections to be assembled in the city of Brno, before being delivered to units in Hungary and Austria. The camouflage of Diana built G-10's could be uniformly colored across these sections or feature adjacent parts in very different colors.

This specific G-10 seems to be one of the uniformly colored examples. An interesting detail is that the data stenciling only was applied to the right hand side of the fuselage, with the fuel grade, engine oil, and engine coolant labels being missing from the left side. The late ID markings for Luftflotte 4 consisting of a yellow rudder and band around the nose are applied. These were applied to all aircraft operating under Air Fleet 4 in Hungary and Austria beginning in mid-March 1945 and superseded the yellow tail band and V markings seen earlier. For some reason, the yellow on the rudder was thinly applied, allowing the W. Nr. and camouflage splotches to seep through.
