WIP P-47D-11 373rdFG 410thFS
« on: August 08, 2023, 09:41:38 PM »
I think this is a striking scheme for a razorback Thunderbolt; the upper white invasion stripes overpainted with drab green.  I hope I am able to do it justice.  My notes say it was piloted by a Lt Bolin, but I can't corroborate that anywhere. Based at  RAF Woodchurch, this aircraft is noted to have been badly damaged, but the pilot survived.  It appears the left wingtip was replaced with one from an OD-painted aircraft.

Looks very nice so far.

I think the black stripes were over-painted with OD green also.

Thanks fellas.

I think some Groups splashed OD over all the invasion stripes, black as well as white, but I know for example, the 370th only painted out the white stripes on their P-38s.

It looks to me in these photos like the black stripes are still there...

I'm seeing a lot of green/brown carrying over across the black and white stripes. I don't see enough dirt and grime on the metal portions of the wings to think it's also dirt and grime on top of the stripes blending them together in the photo.  Also, look at the B/W photo you just posted. Notice how much darker the black cowl ring is than the black stripes? That's why I'm inclined to think it was a single coat of OD over both black and white stripes.

Looking good Oboe. I would also say its OD over the black stripes.

Thanks guys, I'll try it and see how it looks with OD over both white and black stripes.

But a couple of counterpoints to consider:

1) If they used a thick enough coat of OD paint to completely cover those relatively bright white stripes, wouldn't that thick of a coat of paint easily cover the black paint as well?

2) Examine the color photo, looking closely at the fuselage upper and lower invasion stripes - doesn't that forward black stripe appear to be roughly the same shade both above and below the insignia?   If the upper black stripe was carrying a coat of OD paint thick enough to cover white stripes, how could this be?

I also see I need to widen the stabilizer black ID bands, adding width to the outside of the stripe, and I could darken the OD antiglare paint as well...

To my eye the black stripes are clearly visible if just a little faded, especially on the wings. Maybe the green is a little darker.

Well, the OD over the white is much lighter than the OD on the anti-glare. To me it looks like the OD is bringing the black and white stripes towards a middle tone.

The stripe under the insignia looks darker than the stripe above it. It is most similar in tone to the black stripe on the vertical stab, and both are in shadow too. The upper black D-Day stripes are very much lighter than the upper black stripes on the horizontal stabs. Everything I see says OD over both black and white invasion stripes.
