781st BS B-24 Photos?
« on: August 21, 2023, 09:34:28 PM »
(Please move if needed. I posted here as I figured the skinning team would be most likely to have info, and maybe some of them will like this too)
Hello All,
I was looking at Ghosts Of The Skies by  photographer Philip Makanna and this B-24 stood out to me with its somewhat flamboyant nose art.
Potential training skin for attacking bombers... :devil
Does anyone else know of more pictures of this bird?

Thanks!

Thanks!

I am familiar with this plane I will need to go digging about for what I had.

In the mean time.

Edit.

I do recall now there was only two photos at that time and the skinner chose to pass on it due to lack of photographic evidence to base a skin off of.

At least with the last link they show several photos of the nose art  "Chief Jo-Jon" on the other side of the plane.

I will dig about and see if more info has come to light it was many years ago that I last looked at this one.

Edit#2.

It was coded with the letter E per this link.

Letter E not sure if its the same plane :headscratch: the serial numbers are hard to make out.
Possibly the same plane before the nose art or a replacement Letter E aircraft for the lost plane in question?

Found a cleaner image.

This aircraft above was lost before #41-29414.

Normally I'd like at least one photo of the whole aircraft to do a skin. However I think Lyric1's supplied enough info in this thread for me to skin this aircraft, given that the squadron, airframe codes and the squadron markings are all known.

There is one possible issue though; IIRC the canopy framing area on the AH B-24 is oddly mapped and that might prevent me from painting the target across it, which is the main point of doing the skin. I'll have a look at this issue when I have some time before deciding whether to proceed.

:aok Thanks Lyric for the photos, nice to know there are more out there!
And thanks for offering, Greebo-if it's a project you're interested in.
Appreciate what you guys do for the game.

I've managed to get a reasonable looking target to map over the AH B-24J canopy. To say this area is "oddly mapped" was a bit of an understatement by me as the various parts of the canopy have massive scaling, double texturing and banding issues. The front edge of the framing has bits of the target missing but its not possible to add them without getting white bits elsewhere on the frame. I'll get on with the rest of the skin now.

Looks really good Greebo.   I can imagine the trial and error you went through to figure out the irregularities in the map.  Your persistence paid off!

About the pilot - on the one hand I have to admire his bravado to have a big target painted over his station, and the words "Come and Get Me You Bastards!" painted on the side of his plane.  Seems like that kind of defiant attitude could buck up a bomber crew that has to put up with fighter attacks and flak barrages.  He might have been very popular with his crew - he seems like he had a 'larger then life' type personality.

On the other hand, I think he's nuts and I'd never want to get in a plane with him...

Looking forward to seeing this one in game.  <S>
