1st Lt. Carroll J. "Andy" Anderson
P-38J-15-LO “Virginia Marie" / "Margaret" (194)
S/N 43-28538
475th FG, 433rd FS "Possum Squadron"
Hollandia Strip, New Guinea 1944
This P-38J-15-LO named "Virginia Marie" / "Margaret" was flown by 1st Lt. Carroll J. (Andy) Anderson out of Hollandia Strip, New Guinea, in 1944. This is the penultimate version of the paint scheme which later added more blue and the side number to the vertical fins. Although he scored no victories, Anderson frequently flew with the second-leading American Ace Major Thomas B. McGuire, Jr. on combat missions over New Guinea. In the early 1970s, Anderson launched what is said to be the first (and only) investigation into Major McGuire’s fatal final mission. His findings were presented in the January 1975 issue of Air Force Magazine under the title “McGuire’s Last Mission".
Many thanks to Lyric1 for the research help and Devil5O5 for the color sample of blue used. Thanks to the rest of you for the feedback as I worked through it. Your input was valuable. And a hat tip to Greebo for his great work on the default. He sure made this a lot easier for the rest of us.

And for those that are curious about how this scheme evolved....
