Combat trials Ostwind
« on: December 15, 2023, 03:13:26 AM »
Thank you to Lyric1 for finding me the info for this skin. Ostwind photos from WW2 are  very thin on the ground. Only three of them were ever photographed, this one and two from s. Pz.Abt 507. Not surprising perhaps as only 43 or so of them were built in the last year of the war.

This Ostwind was the prototype built using a refurbished Panzer IV Ausf G chassis taken off the Wirbelwind production line. This first turret was made of thin mild steel and seems to have been painted before it was mounted, given its different style of camouflage to the hull. Following testing this vehicle was sent to the Western Front for combat trials with an unspecified unit, this despite its unarmoured turret. The trial was a success with only minor modifications suggested and so production began soon after.
