Fw 190A-9 "Red 22" Jg 301

Fw 190A-9 of 6./Jg 301 in May 1945. Pilot unknown. This aircraft was found abandoned at Bad Landensalza airfield. The A-9 had a more powerful engine than the A-8 and required a larger oil cooler ring on the front of the cowling and cooling fan with more blades mounted behind the prop. Artist/modeler representations of this plane vary wildly in their camouflage colors with everything from the mid war grays of RLM 74 and 75 to the late war brown and green of RLM 81 and 82. My own conclusion is that it was likely painted with 75 gray-violet and 82 olive-green. The gray wraps around the leading edge of the wings and also covers the gear doors, while the rest of the lower wing was unpainted. RLM 76 light blue covers the fuselage sides and tail. The yellow and red tail band used by Jg 301 wraps the rear fuselage with a red Gruppe bar indicating that it belonged to II/Jg 301.

Nice work.  Red and yellow can be difficult to say the least.
