FW 190A-5 flown by Erich Hondt,
staffelkapitan of 2./JG 11 in October 1943. This aircraft was outfitted with two experimental twin-20mm cannon gondolas, but the size and bulk of hauling six 20mm cannons was not worth firepower increase and the gondolas were scrapped after a short time. On October 8th, 1943, Hondt lost this aircraft while intercepting B-17's of the 100th Bomb Group en route to Bremen. He inadvertently collided with a bomber named "Marie Helena" which resulted in the total destruction of the bomber and fighter. All 10 men of "Marie Helena's" crew were killed but Hondt survived, albeit with severe burns. He spent the next year in the hospital recovering from his wounds, but returned to combat. He commanded 3./JG 11 and later flew ME 262's in JV 44 under Adolf Galland.
"Black 13" features a colorful scheme with elements intended to aid in quickly making formations and reforming after attacking bombers. The white tail indicates a squadron leader and the red "V" was used for flight leaders, hence Hondt filling both positions. Many artists/modellers, including Krusty, show this scheme with a Defense of the Reich tail band, but high quality photo reference show that this plane did not have one, which makes sense given the time frame. The prop spinner was painted red, the color for the staffel.
