Anyone using NV RTX 4060?
« on: June 02, 2024, 01:20:16 PM »
In looking ahead to the release of MS FS2024 I plan to upgrade my GTX 1060Ti 12G  card. Best bang for the buck (so far) seems to be the RTX 4060 8 GB with OC speeds +/- 2595. Price point around $310 - 320

Anyone using one of these? Open to other suggestions as well.

Thnx

I use the RTX 4060 Ti Works great, I have no trouble flying DCS, not that I spend much time doing that.

Would you please double check the models and amount of memory? I can't find any information about a GTX 1060Ti with 12GB, actually it's hard to find even the 1060 Ti. Even Nvidia doesn't list it.

Aside of that, the 4060 is 3 generations newer than 1060. The "tens" in Nvidia card naming tell the relative level of performance within each generation. And the new generations are always faster than the previous ones. This chart might reveal what they think about the performance for various games including MSFS using different cards. The link to the site only wanted to show the Finnish language version no matter what.

My BAD!!!   It's a 1660 Ti card. 6 GB dedicated memory; 16 GB shared

I think it might be a better idea to say what your budget is and then see what people recommend in that price range.

For example: My budget was around $500 and after a bunch of research I ended up buying a 4070 Super for a bit over $500. From all the research I did it appeared to be the best bang for the buck in this price range.

My previous upgrade budget was $200 and I ended up going with a 1080 TI from ebay and I'm still using this one in my backup computer and I can run all the games I play on it without a problem. (including AH3 in VR with max detail)

6GB of memory seems rather low for current cards and the performance of this card appears to be around the same as the 1070.

Also depending on your time frame the next gen cards should be coming out in the not to distant future which will hopefully push prices down on the current cards.

Peak budget is $400 tho $350 would be the sweet spot +/-.

MSFS2024 is due August so there's no rush. My current card runs the current version with a average FR of 30. Time is on my side  :old:

After a quick search and not much research it looks like the A770 has about the same performance as the 1080TI for just over $300 on amazon.
This appears to be around 80% faster then the 1660 TI
Looks like it also has 16GB of VRAM.

The 4060 TI shows to be around 30% faster then the A770 and is showing around $370 on amazon.
I only see a 8GB VRAM version of this one.

(I used the 1080TI for reference as I have it and have an idea of it's performance) Like I said previously it will run AH3 in VR at max detail and maintain the 70FPS refresh of my VR headset. It will also maintain the 165 refresh on my monitor at 3440 x 1440.

The 1080 Ti is still fast considering its age. And the Gtx 1660 Ti was the fastest non-raytracing card by Nvidia after the first RTX cards were launched, about as fast as RTX 2060.

I've been using this benchmark for getting a big picture: https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html. The rank can be somewhat different to other comparison benchmarks so viewing several is recommendable. This one ranks the A770 just a few points above the 1660 Ti, not 80% faster. The RTX 4060Ti almost doubles the amount of points. Speed as such isn't the only variable used in benchmarks so reading them requires some keen eye. For example if a comparison tells that the VRAM is 200% higher on one card compared to another but the core of the other is 50% faster, which one would run your games better? Add to that things like heat throttling, power consumption, bus speeds (how fast the data is transferred between components) etc. It's exhaustive and to find the optimal one to suit the exact components in your system would require personal testing which for most of us is beyond our budgets.

The old rule of thumb was to double the overall performance level. In this case I'd go for RTX 4060 Ti despite the Intel A770 having a lower price tag and potentially being tuned to run MSFS well - for unnamed reasons I've got a feeling that Microsoft has a closer relationship to Intel compared to other manufacturers. But does that only mean operating systems and processors, I don't know. Another thing I've learned is that different departments of Microsoft don't consult each other too much when coding updates...

Oh and there is a 16GB version of RTX 4060 Ti.

I would agree that the A770 might be risky as it appears it was released before the drivers were ready.

Toms Hardware usually has decent recommendations for cards as well and performance charts and charts that show performance for the money.
Here's a review on the A770:
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/intel-arc-a770-limited-edition-review/4

Here's a chart showing the relationship between generations:
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html

And here's one showing performance at different resolutions with power consumption.
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-gpus,4380.html

Here's where I got the numbers for the 80%.

https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1660-Ti-vs-Intel-Arc-A770/4037vsm1850973

This is running their test only. I use this site as it's pretty simple to get a ballpark idea on relative performance between cards quickly but I'm sure you could find different results depending on the test.

That's another benchmark that I often look at and I did find the comparison you linked to. If the A770 really is that good, it's a good bang for a buck. But why isn't there any description about it at the bottom of the page? They tell that it was released Q2/22 which is over two years ago. Yet no-one's had the time to write the description which to me is a bit suspicious.

There's quite a bunch of reviews available. The best comment IMO was "it's very nice to have a third player on the field". Nvidia and AMD have quite a lot of experience in GPUs, then again Intel knows their CPUs and they also make motherboards and chips so they might get some advantage from that. What holds me back the most is the lack of several makers. I've learned to trust some brands more than others and I'm not alone in favouring the top tier manufacturers.

This review pretty much sums up why Passmark ranks it so low compared to Userbenchmark: https://www.techradar.com/computing/gpu/intel-arc-a770

Its Achilles Heel, though, is revealed in the PassMark 3D Graphics test. Whereas 3DMark tests DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 workloads, Passmark's test also runs DirectX 9 and DirectX 10 workflows, and here the Intel Arc A770 simply can't keep up with AMD and Nvidia.

So for older games it at least currently isn't a good choice. For MSFS2024 it might be.

That's an interesting review. I'm surprised that it does so poorly in older games.

I would love to hear from somebody that actually has an A770 in the real world. That would be great as all these tests and benchmarks have so many variables.

Between my computer, my wife's computer and my kids, I have real world experience with the following cards if anybody has questions about these. (One thing that may surprise most is I was able to run AH3 in VR  with the R9 380.) I have used all the other cards newer then it for VR as well.
4070 Super
1080 Ti
1070
3060 (laptop)
R9 380
7870 Tahiti LE
GT 1030

I also have other older cards laying around that have been retired.

If anybody has an questions about these I can give first hand experience.
