New Build
« on: September 06, 2024, 02:28:52 PM »
Looking building a new computer here in the next month or so, any suggestions and advice would be appreciated. Looking at trying to gt a set up for VR. My current machine is a Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd., Z97X-Gaming 7. Processor is an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790K CPU @ 4.00GHz (8 CPUs), ~4.0GHz, with 16 gigs of ram. My current GPU is an Nvidia GeForce GTX 980. Been a very good computer for the last 9 years, built it in 2015. Thanks in advance  :rock

Going to be listing a 3070 ti in the classifieds here for under $300 very soon

It pushed vr great in AH and decent in IL2 and DCS depending on graphics level

I'll wager a newer I7 thru I9 Intel or AMD equivalent, 32 gigs of RAM-preferably DDR-5 I suppose, Eagler's 3070TI or something close, a good power supply like what Eagler shows in his profile thingie and most importantly, a solid state drive will get you a similar lifespan going forward.
Hell, buy an exact copy of what Eagler is running, that's a good looking rig.

Baby seal onboard, go around!

With the intel drama, I would opt for an amd cpu. They have the best performance for the dollar at the moment, specifically the 7800X3D.

The nvidia 5000-series gpus are about to release, so I would avoid the 3000 gpus. Buy a 4000-series, preferably a 4070Ti or higher.

32gb of ram and a good NVMe drive should have you set for a good while. Everything else is just personal preference.

Great feedback gentlemen, Leisure your comment duplicating Eaglers setup is noted. Wolf, I've never used AMD, so it is an unknown for me, but still an option.

Power consumption is important if you’re on for long periods of time.

7800X3d or 7950X3d Cpu depending on what type of work loads you want to do. Just gaming and basic PC office work and I would stay with a 7800x3d if you need more cores for video editing and what not then I would look at a 7950 X3D 7950 or 9950 CPU.

Intel isn't looking to hot right now and 9000 AMD appears to be more efficient than stock 7000 counterparts but offer no real performance gains and there are no X3d CPUs for 9000 amd right now.

Graphics I would wait till the release of the RTX 5000 series releases. While what you have wont do DCS or IL2 in VR very well if at all it can still handle most games and may even be able to handle AH in VR.

Even though I'm a computer science guy and write code for a living I'm tired of building my own computer.

I'll probably buy one from starforge pc https://starforgesystems.com/

Anything in the 2k+ range should do you well
