Now you tell me! It was the concept of the SSD that really motivated me to build a new computer (No cables to manage).

If you're building new you wanna go with Gen 5, at least for the system disk. Can be twice as fast as the fastest Gen 4.

And it looks like Gen 6 will be twice as fast as Gen 5. For almost 45 years I've tried to keep up with technology. Sometimes on the bleeding edge, sometimes not. A lot more not these days. I remember the days, before qemm or himem, when anything over 640k in the IBM clones wasn't good for much more than a ram drive. Back then programs were small enough to be moved to and run from a ram drive. With non-volatile memory getting faster and faster it may seem like we're using ram drives once again.

Can you tell the difference in everyday use? Or only in tests?

Rather, should you pay more if the difference is like between crazy fast and lightning fast?

Back in the day when hard drives started to supersede floppies, they had to slow down the animation that showed the saving progress. People just couldn't believe that the file that would have taken half a minute to be saved on a floppy was written on the HDD in a second.

We just built my brother a new machine using a Crucial T705 and yes, I could tell the difference.

Of course there were other factors, faster DRAM, faster CPU, maybe faster chipset on MB.

I'm sure for the average user there will be next to zero discernable difference between these generations of SSDs. Certainly not a justification for double the cost.

Obviously without a dramatic change in technology we approach diminishing returns. You can't know the difference between a fast gen 4 and fast gen 5 NVME without seeing it firsthand or at least know the numbers like boot time, app start time, pauses due to disk access etc....
