can you create a squad of one?

This is not necessary at all. You can just invite yourself. A relog might be necessary to show the new squad.

The snail is correct.  I logged back in and the squad name appeared.  When I tried to invite myself before, the game AI told me to GTFO.

they were only flagged on the score page as "invalid", the squads themselves were never deleted
