A violent encounter can happen anywhere. Transitional spaces, such as parking lots, gas stations, parks, etc, are places we go almost every day. I am armed every day, everywhere. I shoot live fire drills 3 or 4 times a month. We also have an abundance of potentially dangerous animals. Feral hogs, Coyotes and Gators. In the past 5 years, we were confronted two times by drug addled homeless in our adjacent nature park. In both instances, the sight of my firearm resulted in their hasty departure. Police later found and arrested one of them (2nd incident).

I always strive to avoid trouble, but should not be possible, I am prepared to do what is required to end a threat. Living in a free state, we don't have to deal with Government limiting our ability to defend ourselves. Indeed, our County Sheriff encourages carrying firearms. Resident's of Chicago have never heard their police speak like this....

Have it and not need it. That is preferred.
I'll never need it and not have it.

I equate it this way, you’re more likely to get hit by lightning, and since thats true, also more likely for mistakes.

Used to own a lot of guns. Its a fun hobby.
