In October 1943 this B-25C bomber was delivered to a depot in Australia where it received a straffer nose conversion. It was then sent on to the 345th Bomb Group's 500th Bomb Squadron in New Guinea. Here it was initially named "Snafu" and sent on the squadron's low level raids against Japanese bases. On one occasion it survived a near miss from enemy flak that wounded both pilots. Later it was renamed "Stubborn Hellion" with a white horse's head (the squadron logo) painted across the nose. On February 15th 1944 while on a low level strike against Kavieng the aircraft was again hit by flak. This time the left hand engine caught fire and the pilot Captain Michael Hochell was forced to ditch off Selapiu Island. All but the co-pilot escaped the crash alive but wounded. After hiding from the Japanese for a couple of days they were spotted by another B-25 from their squadron who reported their position so that a PBY could pick them up the next day.
