Close to 900 mph on the deck.
« on: Yesterday at 04:34:36 PM »
I thought I'd mention this for all you jet jocks and air to mud guys. I may now be a convert!

I've never been much of a jet guy, and I've never been much of an air to mud guy, but I recently unlocked the Mig-23BN in that free game that I currently play with my kids. Before this I'd been mostly flying prop planes with a little bit of ME262, P-80s and F-86s. I must say going close to 900 mph on the deck is a rush, especially when you're hugging the terrain. The engine in the Mig-23BN has enough power to push the air frame to the point of failure so you need to watch your speed. Even a shallow dive after passing over a mountain can put you in dangerous territory.  You also need to stay on top of the wing sweep too as it's not automatic until the later models of the Mig-23. Also, don't try any high g turns at this speed, it won't end well. I does take a minute to get up to max speed but once you're there, there's only a couple aircraft that can catch you on the desk. The F4C/D is the biggest chase threat but it's missiles are not very effective on the deck and i doesn't have a gun. Anyways, I never thought jet stuff and bombing was fun until now. Maybe I'll get over it when the novelty wears off.

I enjoy flying the F-15E in a storm at night hugging the deck to avoid SAMs and Migs on the way to move some mud with JDAMs.
Here we put salt on Margaritas, not sidewalks.

I haven't played in rain but the cloud cover sometimes gets pretty low and you can fly into a mountain top or a hill pretty easy because the Mig23BN doesn't have advanced sensors. The plane also speaks Russian, which I don't so I'm not always aware of what the alerts are that are called out until it's too late. One of the times she started warning about something and I wasn't sure what it was. I was looking around trying to locate the target and not watching my airspeed and pushed the air frame to structural failure. At that point I realized what she was saying! lolz

I did get wacked by a player an Hunter F.6 that jumped me as I was dropping my bombs. I had to pull up to be able to see the target and I had to slow down because the ccip doesn't work well at high speeds in the Mig23BN. He got a missile off on me before I could get back up to speed. If I was smart I would have kept going and hit a different target but I was already slowing down for my bombing run when I saw the him.

I enjoy air to air combat too but flying high speed noe to thwart enemy defenses is challenging and fun.

Aye. I forgot how fun it was. It reminds me of the old days of F19 game when you'd have to fly over pulse radar sights and around doppler radar sites. I got to the point where I could get the CMOH each flight just carrying extra fuel and flying around in enemy airspace. That game was the one that got me to buy my first computer. A Tandy 286 for like 1,500 in the eighties. Wow!

It wasn't too many years after that I was paying by the hour on GEnie to play air warrior.

I'm tempted to see if I can setup something to play those old games that I played back in the day like F19, SWOTL and the Microprose stuff like BoB.
