Connection plays a role in other aspects of the game from who wins a HO and who flies away from a collision and who doesn't..

Wrong it depends on if YOU run into the plane on your screen. The instant you collide on your view on your screen can be off by 40 feet or more from what the other guy sees on his screen. If you dont see yourself running into/clipping another plane you will NEVER get a collision on your plane.

This is two films laid over each other. From one players point of view he collides (plane without the icon), from the other point of view the plane misses by almost 3 plane lengths. So if you avoid a plane on your scree/view you will NEVER collide. It has nothing to do with the internet/lag because what you "see" on your computer is your reality in the game.

Then there are the famous rubber bullets that seems to come and go with varying impacts..

bullet hits work the same way, what "you see" is what you get, but the internet can effect this. The hit data is sent in a "packet" to the HTC servers. The server then apply the damage and send that info in another packet to the computer of the player you shot and applies the damage hits. If you have a crappy connection and it keeps lossing packets that damage data doesnt make it to the other computers and so doesnt show.... so rubber bullets. Loging off and then back in often fixes it as you may get a different "path" to the HTC server (much like switching to a VPN)
