RS 82 rocket range 3 to 4 miles!!!
« on: January 13, 2002, 12:57:33 PM »
I have read twice now that the rs 82 had a combat range of between 5500 and 6500 yards. Frankly this seems amazing.........

I would of thought that such a range would only be effective against  clustered ground targets (light mobile infantry and trucks)

does any one have original data to confirm or refute this?

Those particular rockets were also used as A2A rockets by I-153 and I-16s, even some high-alt MiG-3 interceptors.

They might well have that range but you wont hit anything in particular, its just the way rockets are.

Hm... AFAIK the RS-82 had a  little propeller in it's nose which started to spin when the rocket was launched and after given numbers of revolutions it exploded. So in practice the pilot tried to launch them from the right distance from the target and explosion might had caused damage to the target ie a direct hit was not necessary. Anyway, it's long time ago since I studied these, so I might be wrong.
