I just read on AGW that Air Vice Marshal Johnnie Johnson has died.

He was the leading Allied ace in the ETO  with 38 victories, all in Spitfires.  He was also a distinguished Wing leader and contributor to the evolution of RAF tactics.  You can read more about him here:  http://british-forces.com/cig/Personnel/johnson.html

He wrote a book "Wing Leader" which was a real inspiration for me as a squadron leader, as well as a good read.

308 Sqn will be performing Spitfire fighter sweeps in historical formation Thursday night as a tribute to "Greycap", starting around 2100 EST.  If you are interested, please join us, or fly low and slow in 109s or 190s to give us some nice targets.

Considering the line of work he was in during the war, I'm happy that he was able to die of old age. Still sad to see another great pilot pass.

They number fewer and fewer every year   It's up to folks like us to make sure their deeds are never forgotten. Not only the pilots, but all the brave men who fought in that devastating war. <S> Johnnie Johnson.

He used to live 2 miles from where I live.  God bless his soul!  Salute!

Damn! Another man I would of loved to have met!    I understand he was at the Duxford Airshow recently.

To Johnnie Johnson: SALUTE!

Rock:  Ya see that Ensign, lighting the cigarette?
Powell: Yes Rock.
Rock: Well that's where I got it, he's my son.
Powell: Really Rock, well I'd like to meet him.
Rock:  No ya wouldn't.
