Digital JS port issue?
« on: January 24, 2002, 02:02:20 PM »
I use a CH Fighterstick and it seems to have a problem with the anti-stick warping code. I never get the 'too fast' message when I'm evading but I get it regularly when attacking, even with small 1" stick movements for what I consider very normal gun corrections. My stick doesn't spike and is calibrated in Windows and scaled and calibrated in AH. I usually use a PDPI digital gamecard. I tried my Quadzilla soundcard port which is also a digital JS port and there is no difference between the two. I always considered damping a fix for spikes and I don't want to fly with a mushy stick. Are there any issues with digital JS ports that make them more prone to the 'too fast' code? I've encountered stick warpers in other sims and I find the solution in AH to be worse than the problem. Since other people have posted that they never see this message it seems likely that I'm more prone to it for some reason. I'm not a ham-fisted pilot and I'm certainly not stick stirring while attacking.

Depending on how your joystick port is working and how your deadband and scalings are set, you could cause the code to kick in.

In the setup section in the joystick setup part, watch the graphs and move your stick around close to the center and see what the graph shows.  You want absolutely minimal deadband that you can tolerate, and a moderate amount of damping.  I don't go over about 1/5 of the way up with the damping.  It will also depend on your stick scaling to a degree.

Do me a favour, go into your Aces High directory with Explorer and drill down into the Settings directory.  In there you will find a file called stick.cfg.  Open that file with notepad, and paste the contents into a post on this message board.  I'll take a look and see if you have anything in there that might make the situation worse, and suggest how you can correct it.

Also, I've found that with newer computers and operating systems, USB controls are increasingly the way to go.  I had a problem with my old gameport connectable Sidewinder 3D Pro, and I bought a new Sidewinder Pre. Pro USB to replace it.  I can connect the new Sidewinder through either gameport or USB, and I get much less "spikey" and more consistent control when connected via USB.

Thanks Lephturn, here are my settings. I just locked up attacking 2 buffs, 1 lockup for each, with a smooth flight path and minimal gun corrections. I'll try a little damping but I don't understand why I'd need it. I understand what it does but I have 0 spiking. In setup my stick is dead stable.

Edit: I added damping and so far it's been good. I'd added it before but didn't see any difference when I induced the message on purpose in testing so I didn't bother flying with it in the arenas because I'd added so much I didn't like the control response.
