Mongrels took off from 46 with 9 B-26's. It was low level all the way. We flew south then east to rendezvous with the FDB's who were our escort. My navigator called out the wrong sector but they were able to find us anyway and escort us across the channel. Once we dropped off the coastal cliffs and headed out over the water I assigned targets to the flight. We were to strike the shore batteries near 20 and 19.
Once we were north of 20 we turned south and headed for our targets. We climbed to just under 1000' and went level. Targets were spotted as were our escorts who were engaging enemy fighters low level near the target. Our escort was also assigned to take out the ack which they did or our flight would have ended much sooner.
Our loadout was 4-4k bombs and we each dropped on our targets. I believe 4 of the 6 shore batteries were destroyed. Just over the target the enemy fighters started slashing attacks on our buffs. Me-109's and Fw-190's were spotted. They tore into our buffs and in moments ½ the flight was gone. We were scattered and I was on one engine. Still heading south for 19 the enemy pursued us. Swagger went down to my right and nifty to my left. I turned to RTB and made it a few miles out over the water when an enemy fighter finished me/us off. I had a "gunner" don't remember his call sign who did a great job fending them off. Sarge1 was the last one of our flight to go down. He was in sight of the English coast and had kept 3 enemy fighters at bay across the most of the channel.
