I think the Macchi 205V and Fiat G.55 were pretty much the acme of fighter technology in Italy for WWII...

From what I can tell (not being a smart ass) the 205 is the Italian perk plane. I haven't seen anything else as good out there from Italy. They were severely hampered by the lack of a good high horse power Italian made aircraft engine. That's why the 202 and 205 have DB's in them. From the 205 it is obvious the Italians were capable of designing a very nice plane they were just limited do to the condition of the prewar Italian economy in their R&D. There engine design suffered from that. You have to remember the Germans had been preparing for war for about 5 years before the war began. The US didn't and look at the aircraft available to them at the start of the war. It was the US industrial power that pushed them ahead. The Italians didn't have anything close to that kind of industrial power. As a matter of fact no other country in the word had it. Another thing was the Lend Lease program that had already started the US industry gearing up for war. LOL sorry about the long winded explanation. Someone else may know of a perk quality Italian aircraft.

Maybe we can model a Lamborgine Diablo?

You would just have to drive after people and throw insults at them

The problem with the Re.2005 was structural weakness, though that won't be modeled here. Other than that its performance isn't significantly better than either the 205 or 55 in any way.

The Italians were more hampered by losing the war in 1943 :-) Kind of puts a crimp in development. (Yes, I know Italians fought on in the air, on BOTH sides, till the end of the war in Europe.)

They have absolutely NOTHING to perk. None of the last gasp of their "uberplanes" (MC205, G. 55, Re 2005) has ANYTHING about it to make it perkable.

Based on the specs, and everything I've read, the 205 was the best of the lot.

And I don't see the arena currently taken over by them, do you?

The Fiat G.55 would be a bit better due to its 5-gun armament and higher top speed at alt, but that is about it. None of the "5 series" fighters distinguished itself so high above the other two that it alone was selected to produce.

I agree, the development of a/c ceased pretty much with the Italian surrender. There just isn't anything I have ever read about that would be worth a perk.

Not that made it into production, but there were a few prototypes that might be fun.

M.B.902
M.C. 206
The Re. jet

But they did have a good early/mid '43 plane set :-)
