can i do this with my laptop?

hi, i just got a new laptop and its got this plug thing so i can connect a TV to the laptop. so i was wondering if it was possible to record VHS or something like a TV show to my computer?

The TV connector is almost certainly tv out, not in. You can display your laptop's output on the tv, but not tv/video on your laptop.
If you do want to be able to input tv signals, there are usb tv capture devices on the market.
