I wonder why and how much bandwith a small java-based chatroom would take up. If it can't hurt, why not try it?

I think it's a great idea for those slow-posting days.

<Slapping left forearm> BBS is the best fix I can get while at work.

Chat room… not sure I’d have a pay check much longer after it opened

There is a fundamental problem with a real time chat server.

It would require another server for HTC, as real-time chat servers have to allocate resources for each connection, much like the way AH does.  Taking those resources away from the current servers could cause some players to not be able to connect to the server for playing, due to too many resources being used.  Not good.

Security would also be an issue.  A rather nasty issue in fact.

Just FYI.

Just use IRC...
 www.mirc.com

After you install mirc just go into add server and put this in:

irc.enterthegame.com

then hit connect and type in /join #<channelname> in the text box.

I will set up and register an "#AcesHigh" channel there.  So just connect to the server and type in /join #aceshigh or type it in the pop-up box.

IRC is much better than any java stuff, especially since you can share files etc.

Aren't there viruses that have passed amongst users of IRC?

HTC doesn't have to host it, Skuzzy.  All they would need to do is put a link up off the main page, toss in another, intermediate, page saying that the chat is not an official HTC service and is hosted by [xxxxxx] refer any problems or complaints to [xxxx@email.com] and send them on their way with another link.

This would be a community service by HTC, much like the squadron links, Indian's AH manual (when it was there), the gunsight and sounds gallery.

A chat sounds like a great idea to me.  It would let potential customers get a feel for the great community here in real time, give immediate help for technical and training problems, and help get the passionate anger posts off the main board.  And if you have an idea you can get a preliminary feel for its receptance before posting.

I say go for it.  So's who can host this thing?

Amen!

IRC has been around almost as long as the Internet itself. (Well, I'm exagerating just a little.  )

The resources are all already there.

It's not that hard to learn.

As a matter of fact, newsgroups were not that hard to learn either...
