I've always wanted a Pearl Harbor senereo , But always thought they couldn't be done ....Correctly.

If you know your in a Pearl Harbor then the element of surprise is gone, and THAT was the main reason for the attacks.

Pokie and I were talking last night and he came up with a great idea how to pull off a good senereo..

We make a map, and in this map there are 3 identical Pearl harbor islands. we could have 3 frames to represent the 3 waves.
 

With radar short , the allied  wouldn't know which one of the "pearls" they are attacking until it's too late, then they can scramble once planes are on radar.

There the element of surprise is there.

What we did in the AW Pearl Scenario was to make the US hold on the ground / Runway / REady rooms until an actual Enemy Plane ICON was spotted on the ground - THEN they could take off.

It gave the IJN attackers the intial advantage but gave the US JUST enough time to make a good defence.

After that history went out the window and the fight was on.

For the 2nd frame we let the US take off at T+30 regardless of any enemy sighting ( Forcing the IJN to either try to get to pearl BEFORE T+30 and attack piecemeal or wait long and hope a better coordinated attack fared better ) and the 3rd frame the US took off at T+0 and had a Carrier show up to help hunt and attack the IJN Carriers.

Was a FUN Scenario all in all !

Pearl Harbor is one of those things that would be better as a reenactment than a scenario.  If you don't want it to be a rout, the best way to do that is not to make it Pearl Harbor; or make it Pearl Harbor but with the air defense.

Actually, Pearl harbor in Air Warrior was a side-switch, which allowed both teams to experience both sides of the war.

It was always well fought, alot of fun, regardless of the one-sidedness.  The anticipation while sitting on the runway, is just, priceless :)

... and from the IJN perspective, wondering which of those walk-on pilots was going to rush directly to the island and set off all the freaking alarms...  HELL NO I'M NOT STILL BITTER!!  :D



For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about... one year in the AW Pearl Scenario, we had a dweeb Val walk-on pilot race to the island, setting off the radar trigger, which released the US forces.  I think that was the first "first wave" Pearl strike to get bounced by higher P40s... it was ugly  ;)

Jordi, I have alot of respect for your senerio contributions .


I understand what you did for the senerio, everyone waiting (allied) on the runways in no way is a "Surprise"  what i was suggesting was to have 3 Identical Islands and you don't know what island they are attacking. scrambling to towers and feilds would IMO put the setting of confusion and surprise at a better perspective.

It would be fun to try Nuttz! I'd join. I had fun in AW's Pearl too.


 IMO the only way to do Pearl would be to do an event/scenario with a twist to it. The main aspect of Pearl was the "surprise" right? Well there's no way to mimic that so you really do need to "surprise" the Allied players. They'll know war is coming but as they did back in 1941 they will not know "when."

 So hold a sign up for sides. Balance them out, no need to restrict either side to any certain number of players. And the big twist is to not schedule a specific date for the actual attack.

 Only the IJN staf/players know the actual date of the attack. Although this may be a hard secret to keep from leaking out.

 During the course of a 6-8 week period the CM team makes sure that certain milestones are arrived at so people on both sides can prepare for the eventual clash;

1. CM staff announces relations breaking down. Impasse in talks.  This would mean the attack will occur within the next two weeks but not within 72 hours of the news release.

2. USAAF staff told war inevitable.  This indicates war within the next week but not within 24 hours from that announcement

3. USAAF staff told USN sunk sub off Oahu. This indicates war within the next 24 hours.

4. USAAF staff told experimental radar reports large group of planes indicated. This means the attack will strike within the next  1 to 2 hours and they can now scramble to get the word out to all Allied "pilots" via email and the Allied vbb forumn.  

 With people at work, unable to show that day, not getting the word and other real life issues you would be damned lucky to get 25% of the Alied pilots in the air to meet the full blown IJN attack.

 I imagine this might not be too popular with folks who would like to sign up for the Allied side though. Although I'd sign up to fly a P-40 or a P-36. Like the lottery it sucks to miss out but when you hit it man that would feel good.   (And fugg substitutions too. I want the right planes )

 To help the USAAF pilots they would get color bar indicators in the grids while the IJN  recieved no info like that at all - as they would not have had it over Oahu anyway.

 Icons would be long friendly and short enemy of course. I would prefer NO enemy icons set but one, I'm not sure that is doable in AH and two, it may penalize the USAAF more than help them unless only the IJN could have the no enemy icon setting.

p.s. You could make the event bigger and string it out longer by adding into the plan the Japanese surprise strikes on Malaya, HongKong, Borneo, the Phillipines, Guam and Wake island.

Amen Westy ;)   This whole thing kinda hinges on Vals, Kates, and P40s

AH has several advantages that we didn't have in AW  The field ack guns and ship guns can all be manned giving one team several options on action.

Plus, sitting in the tower, you can be an observer.  With a short icon range, no one mans guns or planes until "Contact" is made (first IJN shots fired or other methods of id)

The one problem I had with a Pearl scenario was in the instantaneous communication to some of the outlying fields.  Basically, the first torp in the water and P40s were upping on the eastern side of Oahu!

The possibilities are definitely there for a nice surprise attacks but until I see some early war planes, it ain't gonna work for me :p.
