Snapshot - Torpedo 8
« on: February 15, 2002, 07:40:28 AM »
Friday Evening Feb 15th at 11 PM Eastern.
Saturday Afternoon Feb 16th at 3 PM Eastern.

Snapshots are open, walk on events that take place in the Special Events Arena (SEA). They offer the flavor of a historical match-up with a brief look at an event in history and it's outcome. Snapshots usually last 1 to 2 hours and are often a "one" life event so fly with care!

Grumman designed and built the TBF Avengers which entered the Pacific war in June of 1942. They made their fighting debut in the Battle of Midway. Assigned to operate from the U.S.S. Hornet was Torpedo Squadron 8. In just two days all of Torpedo Squadron 8 were to perish. Above is a painting reflecting the TBF of Lieutenant A.K. Bert Earnest piloting 8-T-1 toward the Japanese carrier Akagi. TBF 8-T-1 was the only surviving aircraft of Torpedo 8 during the first day of Midway.

We need TWO Volunteer CO's for both sides Friday night and Saturday afternoon.

Don't forget to give the Allies a 100 sq. mile area in which the enemy fleet was last spotted (thats 4 sectors) or you'll end up with TMB's thousands of miles from the battle :)  I've done two of these "Torpedo 8's" in the last year and one didn't give a clue of location and the TBM's ran out of fuel searching.

I will be there for the Saturday one. Nice to see the Snapshots back, I would like to see a weekly one, for the folks who like WW2 "event" style flying (the best kind).

We will run this AGAIN Saturday 3:00 PM EST - Be there or be square !

-------------------

We had between 35-40 pilots show up. THANKS ALL !

The IJN was lead by DmdJordi - The US by Furious.

We set  the carriers in motion and both sides took off.

The IJN had to wait for the US to show up - and they did. the F6F's mae quick work of most of the A6M5b'a - Shot down 10 in the first 10 mins of action.

The dead IJN then upped in PT Boats to awaitthe TBM's. They did show up and headed toward one of the unprotected CV TG's. The PT's tried to cut them off before they could drop. The IJN did shoot down some of the TBM's but not before they sank 1 IJN Carrier.

Total score was IJN 110 pts / US 545 pts - a US Victory !

For the IJN Swagger got 2 kills , Nifty and plumbit got a Kill an assist - Ute and OntosMK1 got 1 kill, Puke and  Ozark got an assit.

For The US
Fish got 6 Kills - A Snapshot ACE !!
Toad and Maze got 2 Kills / 2 Assist
Rude got 2 Kills
Sax got 1 Kill / 2 Assist
LowTech got 1 kill
tically2 got 1 Assist

And

string got the Kill on CV 25 - NICE DROP !

Congrats to all who attended !

Thanks also to SLing and Nifty for helping me out with this !
