German jet fighters and bombers
« on: February 14, 2002, 11:35:12 PM »
Did anyone see the history channel program on the experimental German jet program?  The Germans had a jet dive bomber to replace the Stuka (the He162-carried a 1000lb bomb and had a range of 700 miles) and even had a replacement for the Me262 (The Ta-183).  Unfortunately for the Germans and extremely fortunate for the Allies, the factories producing these planes were destroyed.  However, after the war the Ta-183 was produced by Spain(?).  It had a top speed of 590knts and resembled the Mig15.

There was one very wild design for an aircraft with 3 rotors, with jets mounted on the tip of each rotor.  The rotor system was designed to revolve around the midsection of the aircraft, where the wings usually were.  This was a VTOL bomber interceptor.  Its estimated climb rate was 25,000 (twenty five thousand) feet per minute.

The show is fun but terribly overblown and innaccurate.

Touchd the Gotha at the garber facility.  And to say the least it flew and was more then anyone ever imagined.
