The slender, graceful, ballerina-like fighters were undoubtedly better "dancers" than the F6F but they didn't have the legs, muscle, or sturdiness needed for extended carrier operations.

Besides, high-speed flying characteristics were more important in the Pacific Theater of Operations (and in the ETO as well) than low-speed manuverability.

The F6F devastated Japanese airpower.  Period.

The F6F was simple to build and had very few modifications/variants due to a concentration on mass production rather than experimentation.  It was basically an easy to build aircraft that would overwhelm the combat theater with numbers which is an important quality in its own.  A real war of attrition is much different than a combat arena game where one can re-up continuously.  Still, the Hellcat has very few odd bumps and bulges and really does have graceful lines and to me she is a very beautiful aircraft...especially in that 3-tone blue/gray/white scheme.
