Well I gota say, My old unit is now in Afganistan any my exact old unit the Sniper Section of 3PPCLI is in combat there...
I have since this thread seen the combats in question in detail and I cant believe how dark they are. They are not green they are dark green with black dots all over...very very dark...
I can see why the troops were worried.

Rgr that Pongo. I think it's incredible that these troops are over there and we're (our respectvie gov'ts and militaries) not given them the best that they could have.  (sticks tongue out at the others ;)  )

Blending in with the terrain instead of being "Mr Obvious" could help save some of thier lives as well as allow them to perform better against the enemy.

I agree, especially given the military buildup in Samoa. Led by Samoan strongman Chief Gitugoata the Samoan Navy is being expanded from 20 dugout war canoes to nearly 50 dugout war canoes supported by a vast array of outrigger scout canoes and rafts.

The one saving grace for New Zealand is that the Samoans are too fat to squeeze into the cockpits of their surplus F-4Fs supplied them by the USA in President Regan's  Guns-for-Coconuts Deals during the 80s.

We can only hope New Zealand wakes up in time to arm itself to the teeth against the Samoans before they finish building their war canoes and paddle over to Auckland and kick some Kiwi ass.

Ignorance is bliss isn't it Charon.

Lets see, what threats does New Zealand have....? none? oh ok.

So what role does its Armed Forces play? Oh? Peace Keepers, Civil emergency backup, coastal patrol... ok.

Now, NZ had a choice. Keep the sharp end of our Air Force, which, incidentally hasn't been in combat since the Brits were fighting communists in Malaysia. And keep our Army with its archaeic weaponry, which incidentally has played a major peacekeeping roles in many many actions, as well as active roles in other theatres including Afghanistan (NZ SAS is there!).

Or, we could ditch the totally unused sharp end of the RNZAF (all they really did was the odd airshow). And spend the extra money on bringing our grunts up to a decent level of equipment. And look at some newer transport choppers and aircraft (ie ditch the hueys and hercs).

Which is what some sharp cookie decided to do. Now what kind of moron would advocate spending millions of taxpayer dollars on the sharp end of the air force that is never used. AND... should it ever be used would last all of 5 seconds in combat (no disrespect to the RNZAF pilots... but Skyhawks in combat? LOL).

So Charon, crawl back under the rock from which your primitive mono-celled-brain crawled while more intelligent people than you make the right decisions. OK?
